Ottawa Bylaw Officer Injured in Attack After Issuing Ticket

A bylaw officer in Ottawa was injured during an incident outside city hall on the morning of March 16, 2024, after issuing a parking ticket. The attack prompted a swift response from the Ottawa Police Service, which arrested one individual in connection with the event.
The director of Bylaw and Regulatory Services (BLRS), Roger Chapman, confirmed the details in an email statement. He expressed gratitude towards another city employee who intervened to stop the assault, highlighting the importance of community support in such situations.
Chapman described the incident as an “unacceptable, cowardly act of violence” that will not be tolerated. He emphasized that bylaw officers play a crucial role in maintaining municipal regulations and ensuring community safety.
“BLRS takes incidents of this nature very seriously and will conduct a full review to determine whether there are any other practices that can be put in place to reduce the risk to our staff,” Chapman stated. He also noted that the injuries sustained by the officer were not severe, which he considered fortunate.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of city employees tasked with enforcing regulations. Chapman acknowledged the quick action of the Ottawa Police Service in making the arrest and thanked the city employee who assisted the officer during the attack.
As the investigation continues, no further details can be disclosed regarding the incident. The BLRS is committed to ensuring the safety of its staff and will explore additional measures to protect them from future incidents.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by municipal employees in their daily duties and the potential risks involved in upholding community standards. City officials remain focused on supporting their staff and addressing any vulnerabilities that may arise in their work environment.
