Ottawa Charge Coach Carla MacLeod Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Ottawa Charge head coach Carla MacLeod has publicly disclosed her diagnosis of breast cancer, an announcement that has resonated deeply within the hockey community. During a team meeting on Sunday, MacLeod shared the news with her players, expressing the emotional challenge of uttering the words “I have cancer.” She described the overwhelming support she received following her announcement, which far exceeded her expectations.

“I thought there would be a little social media post and maybe one or two comments, but the outpouring of kindness has really humbled me,” MacLeod stated. As she enters her third season with the Ottawa Charge, MacLeod plans to step back temporarily to undergo treatment, but she remains determined to return to coaching as soon as possible.

“I know I’ll be in great hands,” she said. “The goal is to be back behind the bench as quick as possible and miss as few games as possible, but I need to ensure I’m healthy.” Despite her treatment, MacLeod aims to stay involved with the team and has plans to coach for Czechia at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics in February.

Team Unity and Support

In MacLeod’s absence, assistant coach Hailey Irwin will lead the team. Irwin emphasized the group’s commitment to playing with intensity to honor their coach. “It’s what Carla deserves. She’s sharing her story and being vulnerable, and I think the hockey community has been amazing in their support,” Irwin noted.

General manager Mike Hirshfeld expressed confidence in the team’s leadership and the emotional bond shared among players. “The affection and support the players have shown Carla reflect who they are as individuals,” he commented.

Team captain Brianne Jenner acknowledged the difficulty of the news but emphasized the need to follow MacLeod’s positive example. “We are trying to maintain a positive attitude and continue to do what we love,” Jenner said, adding that the team will miss their coach dearly.

Teammate Emily Clark highlighted the significance of MacLeod’s diagnosis within the women’s hockey community, stating, “It’s an important conversation to have. Everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer.”

Raising Awareness

MacLeod is determined to use her platform to raise awareness about breast cancer, particularly among younger women. She pointed out common misconceptions surrounding the disease, noting that many believe it only affects those with a family history or older age groups. “I have no family history, and I’m only 43,” she remarked. “This can hit any of us.”

She plans to share more about her journey as she learns about her treatment options. “This has been a journey for myself. I suspect that story will be shared when the timing is right,” MacLeod explained.
