Outbreak of Rhinovirus Confirmed in Blind River Long-Term Care Unit
A confirmed outbreak of rhinovirus has been reported at the North Shore Health Network’s long-term care unit in Blind River. In response, Algoma Public Health (APH) has declared the situation an outbreak, prompting immediate precautionary measures to safeguard residents, staff, and visitors.
The North Shore Health Network announced on Friday afternoon that it is collaborating closely with APH to monitor all residents for new symptoms. To prevent further spread, the unit has been closed to new admissions. Rhinoviruses, commonly known as the cause of the common cold, infect the lining of the nose, sinuses, and throat. Symptoms typically last from one to two weeks, according to Health Canada. Vulnerable populations, including young children and individuals with weakened immune systems, are at a heightened risk of developing pneumonia from these infections.
New Precautions Implemented
Effective immediately, several precautions have been put in place at the long-term care home. Visitors are now required to wear a medical mask at all times and must perform hand hygiene upon entering and exiting the facility. Visits have been restricted to one resident at a time, and it is strongly recommended that all non-essential visits be rescheduled for a later date.
A statement from the North Shore Health Network emphasized the importance of personal health considerations for visitors. “All visitors should consider their personal health in determining whether visiting is appropriate,” the release stated. Those exhibiting symptoms consistent with influenza-like illness, such as fever, cough, difficulty breathing, runny nose, or sneezing, will be encouraged not to visit.
For individuals interested in virtual visiting options, the North Shore Health Network encourages contact at 705-356-2265 ext. 2351. The organization has committed to providing regular updates on the outbreak’s status as the situation develops.
The swift action taken by the North Shore Health Network and Algoma Public Health aims to protect the health and safety of everyone involved, reinforcing the importance of adhering to recommended health guidelines during this outbreak.
