The annual Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon, taking place on November 5 and 6, 2025, aims to raise funds specifically for hearing services at the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon. Each year, nearly 5,500 babies are born at the facility, and every newborn undergoes a hearing screening. The proceeds from this year’s event will be directed towards purchasing essential Otolaryngology equipment, which plays a crucial role in diagnosing and treating hearing impairments in children.

Among the children who benefit from these services is Emmett, a six-year-old from Saskatoon diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome Type A. This rare genetic condition can severely impact a child’s ability to hear and speak. Emmett still has some hearing but relies on hearing aids, which his mother credits with significantly enhancing his interaction with others, musical engagement, and overall focus.

The Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital employs a dedicated team of specialists, including Otolaryngologists and Otologists, who address a variety of ear, nose, and throat issues. Additionally, Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists work collaboratively to assist with communication and swallowing disorders. The hospital screens between 15 and 20 babies daily, with approximately 5 to 8 percent failing the initial hearing test, leading to around 400 detailed assessments annually. Each year, 25 to 30 babies are diagnosed with permanent hearing loss through the newborn screening program, underscoring the importance of early detection.

The hospital serves not only infants but also treats children and teenagers. For instance, Cole, a 15-year-old from Shellbrook, was living normally until he began experiencing unexpected hand spasms in 2021. The symptoms led to the discovery of a brain tumor, which was successfully removed at the hospital in 2022. Cole was discharged just four days later and has since returned to a normal lifestyle.

Another patient, Barrett, a four-year-old from Meadow Lake, was urgently admitted to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2023. Following two weeks of inpatient treatment, Barrett transitioned to outpatient care. His mother, Jonaya, vividly recalls the moment they received the diagnosis, stating, “That day was the hardest day of my life. I will never forget that numbing feeling that took over my entire body when they said ‘your son has cancer.’”

In a positive turn, Barrett recently rang the bell to signify the end of his chemotherapy treatment and is now looking forward to starting preschool.

The radiothon has a proven track record of success; last year, it raised just over $1 million through the participation of more than 30 radio stations across Saskatchewan, including Pattison Media stations in Prince Albert, Melfort, North Battleford, and Meadow Lake. Donations can be made by calling 1-888-808-KIDS (5437) or by visiting the hospital’s website to click on “DONATE NOW.”

The annual event not only raises vital funds but also highlights the essential services provided by Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, improving the lives of countless children and their families across the region.
