Allen emphasized that other symptoms to be aware of include persistent tiredness upon waking, the need for daytime naps, and difficulty both falling asleep and maintaining sleep. He stated, “If you’re constantly tired and not able to work throughout your day without having 10 cups of coffee and not making it to dinnertime, that’s a red flag.”

Individuals who find themselves in this situation should consult their family physician to discuss the possibility of undergoing a sleep test. Sleep apnea tends to be more prevalent in specific demographics, particularly men, middle-aged and older adults, and those who are obese. Factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption can exacerbate the condition, leading to various complications, including hypertension, excessive daytime fatigue, metabolic syndrome, weight gain, and headaches.

Understanding Treatment Options

For those diagnosed with sleep apnea, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) therapy remains the gold standard for treatment. Despite initial discomfort, Allen noted that many patients experience significant improvements in their sleep quality. He remarked, “A lot of people try to avoid using those because they’re not fun. Yes, it’s not fun to wear a mask to sleep, but it does improve your sleep substantially.”

Modern CPAP machines have evolved significantly, becoming less obtrusive and more user-friendly. Allen highlighted these advancements, stating, “They used to look like little generators; now they look like laptops or iPads. They’re very small, very quiet. The masks are very small and quiet. So, it’s gotten a lot easier for people to wrap their heads around wearing a mask on their face at night.”
