A fitness instructor in Victoria, Canada, is transforming perceptions about aging and physical activity through her engaging classes. Justina Bailey, who has taught fitness for over 35 years, combines her extensive training and personal experience to empower her students, both in-person and online.

Bailey’s approach is centered around fostering a love for movement while breaking down misconceptions surrounding fitness and aging. She believes that understanding the “why” behind exercises is as crucial as knowing how to perform them. Her students frequently express gratitude for her attentive guidance. “Every instructor teaches you how to do something, but not why,” said Peggy Howard, one of Bailey’s long-time students.

The journey into fitness instruction began for Bailey when a male instructor at the YMCA encouraged her to pursue the path at just 16 years old. She recalls, “He said, ‘Why don’t you be a fitness instructor because you look like you’re having a good time.’” Since then, she has trained globally in various specializations, seeking insights from professionals such as orthodontists and osteopaths to enhance her classes. “This is an organism we’re talking about,” Bailey emphasized regarding her holistic approach to fitness.

Bailey’s students appreciate her individualized attention and respect for their unique abilities. “She’s so respectful of everyone’s limitations,” Howard noted. “She takes the time to look at how you’re doing an exercise, correct you where necessary, and applaud you when you succeed.” For Libby Rush, who manages a chronic illness, Bailey’s classes provide an escape. “When I come to Justina, I don’t have it. I’m transported,” she shared.

Bailey recently gained recognition as one of Canada’s top fitness instructors, as noted by Impact magazine. Her class in Oak Bay, which started with just six students, has now grown to 35 and consistently reaches full capacity. This growth reflects not only her expertise but also her ability to create a supportive community. “She gives me hope,” Rush said. “People just want to be around her.”

Feedback from her students further highlights her impact. Sheridan Cooper described Bailey as “inspiring, understanding, patient, knowledgeable, and always learning.” Howard added, “Anyone who is concerned about their aging body and how to keep active and fit should come, and the friendship in the class is amazing.”

Bailey acknowledges the mutual support present in her classes, stating, “We’re a good team. I think I support them as much as they support me back.” Her commitment to fostering a positive environment where movement is celebrated continues to resonate with her students, showcasing the powerful role fitness can play in enhancing quality of life, regardless of age.
