84-Year-Old Great-Grandfather Brings Joy to Abbotsford Students

An 84-year-old great-grandfather, Ben Gruber, has become a beloved figure at Clayburn Middle School in Abbotsford, B.C., greeting students each morning for over a decade. His presence has made a significant impact on the school community, with many students expressing how his friendly demeanor brightens their day.
“Seeing him makes my day instantly better because he’s just nice,” said June Zander, a Grade 8 student. Gruber’s influence is evident, as some students proudly wear pins featuring his picture. He even signs autographs and has developed a special handshake with the children, which has become a school-wide phenomenon.
Gruber began this role after his grandchildren attended the school, initially unsure of what to expect. “I didn’t really know what to expect, what to do,” he recalled. Yet, he quickly realized the connection he formed with the students. “How come those children somehow liked me and came to me?” he wondered. His attentive nature and genuine care seem to be the reasons behind this bond.
Students have shared personal stories about how Gruber has supported them during tough times. “When I was having a bad day, he came right to me, just trying to get me up for the day, which definitely helped for sure,” mentioned Beau Cryer. His ability to notice students who may feel isolated or down is a hallmark of his approach. According to Elizabeth Smoes, the vice-principal at Clayburn Middle School, Gruber engages with those who seem to need a bit of encouragement, helping them leave with a smile.
Gruber finds purpose in his role, stating, “To be a purpose to the kids, to help them make a good day and cheer them up, gives me pleasure and happiness.” His routine involves telling students every Friday, “I insist you take two days off. But do not forget to come back on Monday.” He reassures them, “If you don’t come back on Monday, I’m going to miss you.” This simple yet heartfelt message resonates with students, who appreciate his warmth.
The impact of Gruber’s presence at Clayburn Middle School cannot be overstated. “There has never been another Ben. He’s one of a kind,” Smoes remarked. Many in the school community regard him as the heart of the institution. Gruber’s commitment to fostering a positive and supportive environment has not only enriched the lives of countless students but has also solidified his unique position within the school, making him an integral part of their daily lives.
