Alberta’s Beef the Steer Sets New Guinness World Record

A new record has been established in Alberta, where a Holstein steer named Beef has gained recognition as the world’s tallest living steer. Beef measures an impressive 1.95 metres (6 ft 5 in), surpassing the previous record holder by half an inch. He resides in Picture Butte with his owner, Jasmine Entz, who originally brought him home from the dairy farm where she works.
Entz initially acquired Beef with plans to train him to be ridden like a horse. “I knew he was going to get big, but I never expected he was going to get this big,” she shared in an interview. When Beef was a calf, he weighed around 80 pounds and could easily be carried. Now, at over 2,400 pounds, he has certainly grown beyond her expectations.
Despite his size, Entz describes Beef as having a calm and respectful demeanor. “Given his size and strength, he’s very easy to handle, very respectful of fencing and buildings,” she explained. He is not just a massive animal but also a character. “He loves any kind of attention, he knows his name, and he comes for a snack any chance he gets,” she added.
Recognition and Community Pride
Beef’s achievement as the tallest living steer has garnered attention not only for his size but also for the sense of pride it brings to Entz and the local community. She expressed her excitement about having a Guinness World Record certificate displayed in her home. “It’s pretty cool, having grown up reading these books,” Entz reflected. “That was always the highlight of the school year, the new Guinness book coming out… and now we’re in it, and I never could’ve dreamt of being in it.”
Entz’s journey with Beef highlights both the unique bond between humans and animals and the unexpected paths life can take. As Beef continues to capture hearts with his gentle personality and towering stature, he stands as a symbol of pride for Picture Butte and a remarkable testament to the joy that animals can bring into our lives.
