Alberta’s Cold Lake Sparks Interest with Legend of Kinosoo

Cold Lake, one of Alberta’s largest and deepest lakes, is not only celebrated for its scenic beauty but also for its intriguing folklore surrounding a legendary lake monster known as Kinosoo. This captivating tale, passed down through generations, originates from local First Nations cultures and has become a point of fascination for both residents and visitors.
According to Cree legend, a young man set out in his canoe to visit a woman who lived across Cold Lake. As he paddled, a sudden loud splash disrupted the calm waters. It was then that Kinosoo emerged, revealing its enormous head and gaping mouth. The massive lake trout attacked, severing the canoe in half, and the young man vanished without a trace. When the woman awaited his return, she discovered remnants of his canoe, marked with giant teeth impressions, solidifying the tale of Kinosoo in local lore.
Exploring Cold Lake’s Attractions
Today, Cold Lake is a popular destination for fishing, swimming, and boating, attracting outdoor enthusiasts year-round. The area is known for its stunning natural beauty and is sometimes referred to as “Alberta’s best-kept secret.” One of the highlights for visitors is Kinosoo Beach, a three-block stretch of fine sand that serves as a perfect spot for families to enjoy summer days by the water.
The legend of Kinosoo not only enriches the cultural tapestry of Cold Lake but also draws parallels with other legendary lake creatures, such as Ogopogo in British Columbia. While many may be familiar with tales of Ogopogo, Kinosoo offers a unique narrative that invites exploration and appreciation of Alberta’s diverse folklore.
