Art Gallery Showcases New Exhibitions by Local Artists

The Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba is set to host an opening reception this evening, featuring three new exhibitions that celebrate local talent. Among the artists showcased are two graduates from high schools in Brandon, highlighting the community’s rich artistic heritage.
Kevin Conlin, a renowned ceramic artist and educator, presents his exhibition titled “Ancestral Aviators.” Conlin, who graduated from Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School in 1979, has made a name for himself with works displayed internationally. After studying ceramics at the University of Northern Arizona and the University of Regina, he taught at Brandon University. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Conlin has worked with prestigious institutions such as the Canadian Museum of Natural History and the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta.
“Ancestral Aviators” invites viewers into a conceptual future museum, where fossilized traces of humanity are juxtaposed with remnants of extinct species. This installation encourages contemplation of the connections between our past and future. On October 25, 2023, Conlin will lead a public tour of his exhibition at the gallery, offering insights into his creative process.
Another compelling exhibition, “8 Rooms,” is spearheaded by filmmaker and animator Anita Lebeau, who is also a 1979 graduate of École secondaire Neelin High School. This installation features eight dream-like miniature environments, reflecting influences from Lebeau’s animated short film of the same name, created in 2022. She collaborated with fellow Manitoba artists Diana Thorneycroft, Shirley Brown, and Seema Goel. Attendees will have the opportunity to join Lebeau and her collaborators for a guided tour on Friday, where they can explore the artists’ creative processes.
In the Kayes Family Community Gallery, the third installation titled “I Couldn’t Have Done It Without You” showcases the work of the Free Flow Artist Collective, consisting of 15 artists who draw inspiration from their local community. Their collaborative efforts highlight the power of support and encouragement in the creative journey.
The opening reception begins at 19:00 and is open to the public at no charge. For additional information about the exhibitions, individuals can reach out via email at [email protected] or by calling 204-727-1036.
This evening promises to be a celebration of artistic expression and community connection, inviting all to experience the creativity of local talents.
