Assiniboine College Student Alec Walters Honored with Award
Alec Walters, a dedicated student at Assiniboine College, was recently awarded the prestigious Manitoba Council for International Education (MCIE) International Student Award. The ceremony took place at the Manitoba Legislative Building, where Walters was recognized for his academic achievements and contributions to the community.
Walters, who serves as the president of the college’s Students’ Association, was one of four exceptional international students honored by the MCIE. The award came as a surprise to him. “I told my sister first, and she was so happy for me,” Walters recalled. His sister, Alexia Walters, a former instructor at the college, played a pivotal role in his journey to Canada.
Community Values and Leadership
Hailing from Jamaica, Walters emphasized the importance of community support, a value instilled in him during his upbringing. “Growing up in Jamaica taught me the value of community and being together for each other,” he said. He trained as a teacher in Jamaica, where collaboration and encouragement among peers were crucial to overcoming challenges. “I want to bring that same energy and commitment to wellness here,” he added.
Walters’ influence on campus is evident, according to Brandy Robertson, an instructor in the Social Service Worker program. “His drive to learn and grow goes far beyond what’s expected, and he approaches every challenge with compassion and positivity,” Robertson noted. “That enthusiasm for learning is something that will carry him far, both in his career and in life.”
Upon arriving in Canada, Walters faced challenges in making connections. “Making connections was my biggest challenge when I arrived in Canada. Thankfully, my sister encouraged me to join the Students’ Association, and that changed everything,” he explained. His involvement has allowed him to establish a supportive environment for fellow students.
Initiatives and Impact
Walters has garnered praise from peers for his commitment to improving student life. Karen O’Gilvie, chairperson of the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts, highlighted Walters as a representative of the Jamaican Canadian community, where individuals strive to give back to their new home. “People go above and beyond in giving back to their newfound home, seeking to leave a legacy and meaningful mark on those they work alongside,” O’Gilvie stated.
His leadership role has seen the implementation of two notable initiatives through the Students’ Association: the Wellness Wagon, which provides stress-relief support, and men’s mental health events. These initiatives aim to challenge the stigma surrounding mental health and foster open conversations among students. “Much of my passion for improved mental health initiatives, especially among men, has guided my time in the Social Service Worker program at Assiniboine,” Walters explained.
Winning the MCIE award has further fueled Walters’ determination to assist others. “It makes me want to go further,” he said. He encourages international students and newcomers to embrace challenges, emphasizing that mistakes can often provide valuable lessons. “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift, so make the most of it,” he added.
Walters’ story reflects the resilience and community spirit that defines many international students, showcasing the impact of their efforts on campus and beyond. His journey serves as an inspiration for others, encouraging them to engage and support one another as they navigate their own paths in a new country.
