BC Transplant volunteers visited Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock on December 4, 2023, to express gratitude to healthcare teams involved in organ donation and transplantation. The event, part of an annual initiative called “Operation Popcorn,” involved delivering boxes of popcorn and treats to staff members, emphasizing the importance of their contributions to the lives of transplant recipients.

Each year, BC Transplant coordinates this initiative across British Columbia, with many hospital staff eagerly anticipating the influx of popcorn, which marks the beginning of the holiday season. In total, over 5,000 packages were distributed to various departments, including intensive care units, emergency rooms, and transplant clinics. This year, Peace Arch Hospital received three boxes for its dedicated nursing, operating room, and ICU staff.

“We are here to say thank you to the staff for the hard work they do,” stated BC Transplant in-hospital coordinator Bobbi Paquette during her visit. She was accompanied by two volunteers, both transplant recipients, who shared their personal stories with the healthcare staff.

Vicki Ellestad, a kidney recipient, and Earl Howell, who received a liver transplant, participated in the delivery. Ellestad, who has been volunteering with BC Transplant for more than 11 years, expressed her heartfelt appreciation. “I was healthy all my life until I wasn’t,” she recounted, sharing how a stranger donated a kidney to her twelve years ago. “All of this was because I was lucky enough to get a transplant,” she added, highlighting the impact of organ donation on her life and her ability to be present for her grandchildren.

Howell echoed her sentiments, reflecting on his experience since receiving a liver transplant 28 years ago. “This is the highlight of my Christmas time, coming to say thank you for all your work,” he remarked. Both recipients emphasized the importance of the staff’s roles in facilitating these life-changing transplants.

Paquette noted that many healthcare workers do not often witness the long-term outcomes of their efforts. “Moments like these show them the positive outcomes of what their work achieves,” she explained. Currently, there are approximately 6,500 transplant recipients alive in British Columbia, a testament to the dedication of the medical teams involved.

The significance of Operation Popcorn extends beyond appreciation; it serves as a reminder of the transformative effects of organ donation. Eric Lun, executive director of BC Transplant, stated, “For all of us, Operation Popcorn is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of organ donation.”

Legislation also plays a crucial role in promoting organ donation awareness. The adoption of Bill C-210 in 2021 allows the Canada Revenue Agency to include a question on income tax forms regarding organ donation preferences. By consenting, taxpayers can receive information about organ donation from their provincial or territorial government. Following this initiative, BC Transplant reported over one million positive responses on tax return forms this past spring, encouraging individuals to stay informed and consider their registration decisions.

As of November 6, 2023, there are 1,617,709 British Columbians registered in the Organ Donor Registry. BC Transplant continues to urge residents to check their inboxes for emails related to organ donation and to click on the links to register their decisions.
