Beloved Community Figure Melvin “Mouse” Downing Passes Away
Melvin Lewis “Mouse” Downing, a cherished member of the Kimberley community, passed away on December 19, 2025, following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 82 years old. Downing’s life was marked by unwavering love, a sharp sense of humour, and a commitment to generosity that endeared him to family and friends alike.
Downing is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Carole, and their three children: John Downing, Cindy (Randy) McCloskey, and Mike (Chantal) Downing. He was a proud grandfather to James (Sarah), Lindsay, Miya, and a great-grandfather to Ezra and Lucy. His siblings, Alice Downing, Bob Downing, and Ruby (JP) Rioux, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members, will also remember him fondly. He was predeceased by his brother Bill (Johanna).
A Life of Service and Community Involvement
Born on July 29, 1943, in Kimberley, British Columbia, Downing developed a strong work ethic early in life. He enjoyed a long career at the Cominco concentrator and also served as a coroner, earning the nickname “Toetag.” His contributions to the community were significant, including his involvement with Kimberley Search and Rescue, where his extensive knowledge of the land and ability to stay calm under pressure made him an indispensable team member.
Many residents will remember Downing for his role as the local Santa Claus, a position he embraced wholeheartedly. His warm personality and approachability made him a beloved figure, often inviting passersby for a chat in his backyard.
Bravery and Resilience
Downing’s courage was evident from a young age. During a fire in his family home, he risked his own safety to guide his younger sister and infant brother to safety, earning a commendation from then-Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. This heroism carried through his life, particularly as he faced his cancer diagnosis with remarkable strength and dignity.
His heart was open to those in need, and he often gave generously without seeking recognition. Downing’s greatest source of pride was his family, and his love for them was evident in all he did.
Melvin Downing leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and warmth that will be remembered by many. His stories and the impact he made on those around him will continue to resonate in the hearts of his loved ones.
A memorial gathering will take place at McPherson Funeral Home in Kimberley on December 27, 2025, at 11:00 AM. The gathering will be live-streamed; details are available at the following link: https://www.hdezwebcast.com/show/melvin-downing-service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to a local Kimberley charity of choice, honoring Downing’s dedication to community service.
