Bobby’s Hospice Celebrates 15 Years of Compassionate Care
Bobby’s Hospice in Saint John, New Brunswick, marked a significant milestone on March 15, 2025, celebrating its 15th anniversary since opening its doors to patients in 2010. As Atlantic Canada’s first dedicated end-of-life care centre, the hospice has provided a safe and comfortable environment for patients with advanced, terminal illnesses and their families.
The care facility, which features ten private rooms equipped with windows and bathrooms, operates 24/7. Each room is designed to ensure privacy, a critical aspect for individuals during their final days. “It hasn’t got the buzz and the bells and all the noises that happen in a hospital,” stated Chris O’Brien, Medical Director of Bobby’s Hospice, who has been with the organization since its inception. “Here at the end of life, you’re not looking at life-sustaining therapies… the focus is on comfort.”
To commemorate its anniversary, Bobby’s Hospice hosted an open house, inviting community members to engage with staff and learn more about the services provided. The event attracted many families who had previously utilized the facility, allowing them to share heartfelt memories of their time at the hospice. O’Brien described the day as filled with reminiscences and meaningful conversations, highlighting the emotional connections formed within the hospice community.
Bobby’s Hospice has expanded its offerings over the years to enhance the patient experience. According to O’Brien, the facility now employs a part-time recreational therapist, providing activities to help patients relax during their often lengthy stays. Additional therapies, including pet and music therapy, are available to offer comfort and distraction from the reality of their circumstances.
O’Brien emphasized the need for public education regarding hospice care, stating, “The reality is hospices aren’t everywhere, and I think our general public likes a little education.” Interest in the open house was evident, with several attendees expressing a desire to tour the facility as they contemplate care options for their loved ones.
Bobby’s Hospice operates primarily through government funding but also relies on community support and fundraising initiatives throughout the year. These events include an annual gala held at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre, which helps sustain the hospice’s mission.
The commitment of the community has been crucial since the inception of Bobby’s Hospice, providing not only financial support but also fostering a compassionate environment for patients and their families. As the facility continues to grow and adapt to the needs of those it serves, its impact on the community remains profound.
