Brock Township Honors Community Leaders at Inaugural Awards

On September 25, 2023, Sunderland Town Hall buzzed with excitement as the Township of Brock held its inaugural Awards of Merit. This landmark event aimed to acknowledge and celebrate the vital contributions of local volunteers, organizations, and leaders who enhance community life.
Mayor Mike Jubb emphasized the importance of recognizing those who often work quietly behind the scenes. “This celebration is all about recognizing the dedication, creativity, and generosity of our residents,” he stated. The event showcased a range of recipients, each making significant impacts within their communities.
Celebrating Community Contributions
Among the honorees was Ken Jackson, awarded Volunteer of the Year for his extensive efforts with the Lions Club. Jackson has successfully raised substantial funds for local projects through the annual Scrap Metal Drive. “Ken’s generosity and dedication set an inspiring example of what it means to give back,” said Mayor Jubb.
The Beaverton Legion Branch 135 received the Community Services Group or Club Award, presented by Councillor Peter Frank. Their commendable service during this year’s ice storm, as well as ongoing support programs for seniors and veterans, highlighted their commitment to the community. “Their service has created a safe and supportive space for so many in our community,” Councillor Frank remarked.
The Social Development Award was bestowed upon The Nourish and Develop Foundation (TNDF), recognized for its diverse programs, including a food bank and transitional housing. Councillor Angela Canavan noted, “From food security to building resilience, TNDF empowers families and individuals to achieve lasting stability.”
Honoring Environmental and Cultural Initiatives
The Brock Accessibility Award went to George Pilgrim of Pilgrims Home Hardware in Sunderland. Councillor Canavan applauded his commitment to enhancing accessibility within the community. “George embodies the values of professionalism, generosity, and community spirit,” she stated.
The Arts, Heritage and Culture Award was presented to Brock Arts and Culture by Councillor Lynn Campbell. The group received recognition for its creative projects, including the Fish Art Installation at the harbour and the Maple Leaf painting contest associated with the Maple Syrup Festival. “They’ve brought arts and culture to life in our township, especially through their partnerships with schools and parks,” Councillor Campbell acknowledged.
For her exceptional leadership in environmental stewardship, Sarah Cowley received the Environment and Climate Change Champion Award from Councillor Cria Pettingill. Cowley was honored for her relentless efforts on the Blossom Trail, where numerous native trees and plants have revitalized the Beaverton waterfront. “Her passion and persistence have left a lasting legacy,” Councillor Pettingill stated.
The Sports and Recreation Award was awarded to Sherri Parr, who has significantly impacted young athletes through her leadership with the Sunderland Stingerz Association. Councillor Clair Doble commended her coaching, which has fostered confidence, resilience, and friendships among participants. “She has truly changed lives through sport,” Councillor Doble remarked.
As the evening concluded, the atmosphere was filled with a shared sense of pride and community spirit. “Congratulations to all the winners,” Mayor Jubb expressed. “And thank you to everyone who sent in a nomination. Together, we are building stronger, more caring communities.”
The inaugural Awards of Merit not only celebrated individual achievements but also highlighted the collective efforts that contribute to a vibrant and supportive community in Brock Township.
