Byron Buxton Misses MVP Bonus by Two Points in AL Voting
On November 14, 2025, the results of the American League MVP voting revealed that Byron Buxton finished just two points shy of a significant financial bonus. While Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge secured the MVP title, Buxton’s performance saw him place 11th in the voting, which greatly impacted his salary potential.
Buxton, the outfielder for the Minnesota Twins, received 14 votes overall, which contributed to a total of 30 points. This placed him behind Jeremy Pena, who finished 10th with 32 points. Had Buxton made it into the top ten, he would have triggered a contract clause worth $3 million, a substantial amount for a player earning around $15 million annually.
The stakes were particularly high for Buxton this season, as he managed to stay healthy throughout 2025. His performance was crucial not only for his team but also for his financial prospects. The contract stipulations indicate that finishing within the top ten of the MVP voting could yield bonuses ranging from $3 million to $8 million, depending on the final ranking.
It is noteworthy that Buxton received three seventh-place votes, showcasing the respect he garnered among voters. Despite this recognition, the outcome of the voting reflected a broader trend where the decisions made by sports journalists can directly influence players’ earnings.
As Buxton contemplates his future in Minnesota, there are indications that he may be considering a move away from the franchise, particularly as it navigates a rebuilding phase. The uncertainty surrounding his position combined with the missed bonus adds another layer of complexity to his career trajectory.
While the MVP voting is primarily a testament to players’ performances over the season, the financial implications make it a critical aspect of players’ livelihoods. For Buxton, the difference of just two points not only represents a missed opportunity for additional income but also underscores the competitive nature of Major League Baseball.
As the baseball season concludes, all eyes will remain on Buxton to see how he navigates the aftermath of this voting and his future with the Twins. The tight margins in the MVP race illustrate the high stakes of performance and recognition within the league.
