Calgary Hosts Vibrant Holiday Markets Showcasing Local Talent

On December 2, 2023, Calgary came alive with a series of festive holiday markets, offering residents and visitors a chance to celebrate the season while supporting local artisans and businesses. Various locations throughout the city featured an array of vendors, entertainment, and culinary delights.

At the downtown venue of Legion #1, the Honky Tonk Market showcased around 20 local vendors. Shoppers browsed through selections of western wear, vintage clothing, and handmade crafts. Culinary offerings included popular food from Tubby Dog, while live music performed by the all-female band Haybells added to the festive atmosphere. Organizer Laura Graham emphasized the market’s purpose: “We created it to give local businesses an opportunity to succeed and showcase their art or curation…and provide a fun place for customers to come.”

The festivities continued at Century Downs, where the 10th edition of their winter market, known as the Weihnachtsmarkt, featured over 130 local artisans. Transforming two barns behind the racetrack, vendors created a Christmas playground filled with crafts, live music, and a variety of foods. Attendees enjoyed Austrian specialties prepared by the venue’s chef, including goulash, pretzels, and mulled wine. Kaitlin Curran, the marketing coordinator for Century Downs, remarked, “We have pretty much everything under the sun – and it is a beautiful sunny day.” The market at Century Downs is set to continue through Sunday.

In the southern part of the city, Taza Park hosted “Under the Stars at Taza Park: A Holiday Story.” This family-friendly market provided a range of activities, including photo opportunities with Santa, storytelling sessions with Tsuut’ina Elders, and children’s workshops. Participants could also engage in a letters to Santa station featuring artwork by Tsuut’ina artist Keegan Starlight, along with face painting and festive treats like kettle corn. Senior community experience coordinator Ruby Kaur expressed enthusiasm about the event: “It’s our first holiday event under the stars at Taza Park and we’ve got lots of activities!” The event runs through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., with plans for a similar market next weekend at Buffalo Run.

Additionally, the Inglewood Night Market opened its doors Saturday at 16:00, bringing together more than 50 local businesses. This market aims to enhance community engagement while celebrating local culture and commerce.
