Campbell River Author Shari Green Wins Prestigious Literary Award
A notable achievement in Canadian literature has emerged from Campbell River, where author Shari Green received the prestigious Geoffrey Bilson Award for Historical Fiction for Young People. The accolade was presented to her during a gala event held in Toronto on October 27, 2023, in recognition of her compelling novel, Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams.
The jury praised Green’s novel, describing it as a gripping exploration of the “familial, personal, and political complexities” faced by individuals living in late 1980s communist East Germany. The novel, published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, has garnered significant acclaim, also being named a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award and the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize.
Set against the backdrop of political upheaval, Song of Freedom, Song of Dreams tells the story of a 16-year-old pianist named Helena, living in Leipzig as she navigates her aspirations amidst the turbulent events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall. The narrative begins in August 1989, depicting Helena’s dreams of becoming a conductor while grappling with the restrictions imposed by the East German government, including bans on Western music genres like Italian operas and even songs by The Beatles.
In her acceptance speech, Green reflected on the relevance of historical events to contemporary issues, stating, “When I was writing this book, I was struck by how often the events and themes of the time were so similar to what I was seeing in the news currently. And it reaffirmed for me the importance of listening to and sharing the stories of history.”
Green elaborated in a previous interview with the Campbell River Mirror about how Helena becomes involved in the Peaceful Revolution, also known as Die Wende (“the turning point”). This movement began with a series of protests called the Monday demonstrations, which commenced on September 4, 1989, outside St. Nicholas Church in Leipzig. Despite the oppressive actions of the Stasi, the protests gained momentum and spread throughout the country.
Green’s work not only highlights the resilience of individuals in the face of political adversity but also emphasizes the power of storytelling in connecting past and present. With her latest award, Shari Green stands as a vital voice in young adult literature, reminding readers of the importance of understanding and sharing the stories that define our history.
