Canada Shines with Two Top Picks in National Geographic’s 2026 List
National Geographic has announced its selection of the world’s top 25 destinations for 2026, featuring two prominent Canadian locations. The publication revealed the list on October 21, 2023, highlighting the unique appeal of these sites for future travelers.
Quebec and Vancouver Among the Top Picks
Quebec stands out with an impressive second-place ranking. National Geographic emphasizes its newest national park, Nibiischii Park, which is notable for being the first managed by a First Nation. The Cree Nation of Mistissini has protected over 4,000 square miles of pristine lake country in the Eeyou Istchee-James Bay region of northern Quebec.
This park includes Quebec’s largest wildlife reserve, Albanel-Mistassini-and-Waconichi Lakes. Visitors can enjoy a range of experiences, from waterfront cabins and floating chalets to a new cliffside walkway that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding boreal forest. Anglers, paddlers, and wildlife watchers are all drawn to the area’s natural beauty.
Vancouver claims the 12th spot on National Geographic’s list, earning recognition as an ideal location to experience the FIFA World Cup in June and July 2026. The city benefits from favorable currency exchanges, new direct flights from Europe, and straightforward entry requirements, making it a top choice among the 16 North American host cities. Beyond the excitement of the World Cup, visitors can explore Vancouver’s stunning landscapes and participate in Indigenous-led tours that offer insights into the region’s history and culture.
Banff Recognized as Readers’ Choice Winner
In addition to Quebec and Vancouver, Banff, Alberta was awarded the Readers’ Choice Winner. National Geographic describes Banff as a remarkable alpine destination that successfully balances urban vibrancy with untamed wilderness. It is located within Canada’s first national park, where visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, from sipping locally roasted coffee on Banff Avenue to observing wildlife such as grizzly bears.
During winter, Banff transforms into a picturesque wonderland, attracting skiers to three renowned resorts: Mount Norquay, Lake Louise, and Banff Sunshine Village. The town offers a perfect mix of adventure and sophistication, featuring celebrated landmarks like the Fairmont Banff Springs alongside local bakeries, galleries of Indigenous art, and a lively nightlife scene with popular venues such as Melissa’s Missteak and Rose & Crown.
As travel enthusiasts plan their next adventures, the spotlight on these Canadian destinations highlights the rich cultural and natural experiences available across the country.
