Celebrating Brian Doyle: Canada’s Literary Treasure Turns 90

Brian Doyle, a prominent children’s author from the Ottawa area, celebrated his 90th birthday last month. Recognized as one of Canada’s most influential writers for young readers, Doyle’s impactful storytelling has earned him a lasting place in the hearts of readers across the nation.
Despite his significant contributions to Canadian literature, national media coverage of Doyle’s milestone has been notably sparse. Many of his admirers, including friends and colleagues, believe it is time to shine a spotlight on his legacy. Patsy Aldana, former publisher at Groundwood Books, described Doyle as “one of the greatest writers of books for children that Canada has ever seen.” She expressed her pride in having published him on her first list at Groundwood, calling it one of her most important accomplishments.
A Unique Voice in Canadian Literature
Friends of Doyle, such as journalist Charles Gordon, emphasize the multifaceted nature of his writing. Gordon stated, “Brian Doyle’s stuff is funny, tender, edgy and profound, all at the same time. He is not just a great children’s writer; he is a great writer, period.”
Janet Irwin, who adapted two of Doyle’s books, Angel Square and Up To Low, for the stage, echoed this sentiment. She described Doyle as a “quietly spectacular writer,” noting how he captures the essence of both Ottawa and the Gatineau region in his enchanting novels. His work resonates with readers, blending humor, generosity, and a sense of mischievousness.
Tim Wynne-Jones, a celebrated young adult author, remarked on Doyle’s impact on Canadian children’s literature, stating that he created “a kind of cartography of the Canadian spirit.” He asserted that Doyle played an integral role in shaping the literary landscape for young readers in Canada.
Enduring Influence and Recent Works
Although Doyle has not published a children’s novel since Pure Spring, his last of 13, released in 2007, he has continued to write prolifically. His commitment to writing remains unwavering, viewing it as a necessity rather than a choice. He has self-published a variety of works, including essays, adult fiction, and poetry.
Numerous tributes highlight the profound influence of Doyle’s work. Writer and critic Sarah Ellis shared how reading Up to Low in 1982 transformed her perspective on literature. “I kept stopping and looping back over specific sentences and paragraphs, asking myself, ‘Is this as good as I think it is?’ It was. Every bit as good,” she recalled. Ellis, who identifies as a lifelong “Doylist,” emphasizes the lasting impact his writing has had on her life.
As someone who also identifies as a “Doylist,” I can attest to the transformative power of his work. My journey as a freelance writer and reviewer was significantly shaped when I reviewed his 1990 novel, Covered Bridge, for the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. Doyle’s distinctive voice, which intertwines comedy and tragedy, has a unique style reminiscent of literary greats such as Dylan Thomas, James Joyce, and Shakespeare. His ability to explore issues relevant to young readers while maintaining a humorous tone sets him apart in the literary world.
As Canada rejoices in the legacy of Brian Doyle, it is only fitting to say, “Elbows Up!” and wish him a happy, albeit belated, 90th birthday. His contributions to literature remain invaluable, and he continues to inspire countless readers and writers alike.
