Chapel on the Green Unveils Historical Marker in Yorkville
Chapel on the Green, the oldest church in Kendall County, is set to unveil a new Illinois State Historical Marker in a public ceremony on October 24, 2023, at 13:00 in Yorkville. The event, titled “Bristol Churches and the Underground Railroad,” is organized by the Chapel on the Green Historical Society NFP and will take place at 107 W. Center St.
Built in 1855, Chapel on the Green was recognized for its historical significance when it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. It stands as the oldest non-residential building in Yorkville, making its upcoming recognition a significant moment for the local community.
The historical society noted in a statement that extensive research into the church’s early members revealed their involvement in the Underground Railroad, creating a vital support network for freedom seekers during the antebellum period. “The research opened up a fascinating window to the past,” the society remarked.
Recognition and Funding
In recognition of its historical importance, Chapel on the Green was included in the National Park Service’s “National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom” in 2023. Earlier this year, the chapel received approval for the new state historical marker, which was made possible by matching-grant funds from the National Park Service.
The unveiling ceremony aims to celebrate the chapel’s rich history and its role in the local community’s support for those seeking freedom. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about the chapel’s historical significance and the stories of those who contributed to the Underground Railroad.
