Community Art Exhibit Aims to Combat Substance Use Stigma
A new art exhibition titled Shaping Stories Together is set to open in Thunder Bay, Canada, with the goal of addressing and reducing the stigma surrounding substance use. This initiative, presented by the Creation Collective in partnership with the city’s Drug Awareness Committee, will be showcased at the Thunder Bay Art Gallery throughout the month of November 2023.
The exhibition aims to facilitate open discussions about substance use through the medium of art. It features diverse works from local artists, each telling unique stories that reflect personal experiences and community perspectives. By highlighting these narratives, the exhibit seeks to foster understanding and empathy among visitors, ultimately challenging preconceived notions about substance use.
Throughout the month, the gallery will host various events, including artist talks and community workshops, aimed at engaging the public further. These events are designed to create a space for dialogue and reflection, encouraging attendees to reflect on their own views and experiences related to substance use.
Creation Collective coordinator, Emily Johnson, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Art has the power to connect us and provide insight into the lives of others. We hope this exhibit will bridge gaps in understanding and spark important conversations within our community.”
In addition to the visual art on display, the exhibition will include informational panels that provide resources and support options for those affected by substance use. The Drug Awareness Committee aims to use this platform to educate the public about the complexities of substance use and the importance of compassion and support for individuals and families affected by it.
The initiative comes at a time when discussions around substance use and mental health are more critical than ever. By leveraging art as a storytelling tool, Shaping Stories Together aspires to not only inform but also inspire change in attitudes and perceptions.
The Thunder Bay Art Gallery is located at 1080 A Waterloo Street, and the exhibition will be open to the public during regular gallery hours throughout November. Admission fees are waived for this special exhibition, encouraging broad community participation.
As the opening date approaches, anticipation builds for what promises to be a thought-provoking and impactful exhibition. By engaging with the community through art, Shaping Stories Together embodies the power of creative expression in tackling sensitive issues and promoting understanding.
