The community of Surrey is set to honor the memory of Gladys Andreas, the founder of the B.C. Ukrainian Cultural Festival, during a series of memorial ceremonies on October 1-2, 2023. Andreas, who passed away on September 19, 2023, at the age of 86, is remembered for her profound impact on the Ukrainian community in British Columbia.

A memorial on the festival’s official website highlights Andreas’s “vision and dedication” to fostering a vibrant Ukrainian cultural presence in the region. Her lifelong commitment to preserving Ukrainian culture and traditions has created a legacy that is expected to inspire future generations. The annual festival, held in Mission every May, serves as a testament to her efforts.

Andreas, originally from Alberta, was not only a festival founder but also an active member of the Arts Council of Surrey. Her involvement extended to the Ukrainian Women’s Association, which supported various youth groups, including the Youth Arts Council and the Young People’s Opera Society. In recognition of her contributions, she received the Surrey Civic Treasure award in 2012, celebrating her achievements in the cultural sector.

Remembering a Cultural Pioneer

In a video shared on the City of Surrey’s YouTube channel, Andreas reflects on her passions, including the Surrey Fusion Festival, the Museum of Surrey, and even learning to play the hammered dulcimer at the age of 50. She was instrumental in promoting and organizing Ukrainian participation in cultural events, showcasing her commitment to community engagement.

Her musical talents were evident through her organization of a musical group featuring the Ukrainian tsymbaly, a variation of the dulcimer. This group participated in numerous cultural events in Surrey and beyond, further underscoring her dedication to cultural expression. Additionally, she played a significant role in the Threads of Many Colours exhibition at the Surrey Museum, highlighting her involvement in various artistic projects.

The memorial prayers for Andreas will take place at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. Mary located at 10675 135 A St. in Surrey. The prayers are scheduled for 7 p.m. on October 1, followed by a memorial ceremony at 10 a.m. on October 2.

As the community gathers to remember Gladys Andreas, her contributions to the cultural landscape of Surrey remain a beacon of inspiration for many.
