Community Mourns Sid Stevens: Visionary Behind Sun Youth Organization

The community of Montreal gathered to pay tribute to Sid Stevens, co-founder of the Sun Youth Organization, who passed away on August 27, 2023, at the age of 85 after a prolonged battle with Parkinson’s disease. A funeral service was held on Thursday to honor his immense contributions to the community and the lives he touched over the decades.
Stevens, along with his late co-founder Earl de la Perralle, established the Sun Youth Organization in 1954, starting with a handwritten newspaper called the Clark Street Sun. The paper was sold for just two cents a copy, providing crucial funding for programs aimed at assisting disadvantaged youth. Brigitte Garceau, a Member of the National Assembly (MNA), reflected on Stevens’ legacy, stating, “The way to describe Sid is that he was truly a real force of nature and wanted to make fundamental changes in the lives of so many.”
Legacy of Community Service
Over the years, the Sun Youth Organization has evolved into a vital resource for families in need, offering food, clothing, medical assistance, and financial support. The organization is also known for its collaboration with local police to enhance neighborhood security through crime prevention initiatives.
MNA Elisabeth Prass spoke about the profound impact Stevens had on the community, saying, “When you hear the determination he had at 13 years old and then you see all these decades later what Sun Youth is. Whether it be the first food bank in Montreal or the sports programs, reaching out to the community, their legacy is going to live on.”
Stevens’ vision for the Sun Youth Organization was not only ambitious but profoundly impactful. His determination has resonated through the years, as the charity continues to serve those who are most vulnerable. City councillor Mary Deros noted, “He had a vision. He stuck to that vision and he fought so hard. We’re all in public office because we believe in serving our communities, and he did it in his incredible way.”
Tributes and Remembrances
As family, friends, and community members gathered at Paperman and Sons funeral home, the atmosphere was filled with a sense of loss and gratitude for Stevens’ extraordinary life. Désirée McGraw, another MNA, expressed her admiration for Stevens, emphasizing his commitment to serving others: “He was a true inspiration, and his contributions will continue to guide us in our efforts to make a difference.”
Stevens leaves behind a legacy that embodies the spirit of community service and philanthropy. The Sun Youth Organization remains a testament to his lifelong dedication to improving the lives of others, ensuring that his vision and impact will be felt for generations to come.
