Community Unites to Support Cancer Care at Langley Memorial Hospital

A strong sense of community is emerging in Langley, British Columbia, as residents rally to support cancer care at Langley Memorial Hospital. Candy Foster, a local resident, has become a key figure in this initiative following her own challenging health journey, which included two cancer diagnoses.
Foster’s ordeal began when her massage therapist noticed unusual swelling in her abdomen. Concerned, her family doctor arranged for an ultrasound, suspecting appendicitis. Shortly thereafter, she was admitted for surgery at Langley Memorial Hospital, where she was met with reassurance from her surgeon, Dr. Steve Hansen. “We’re going to get to the bottom of this, and we’re going to figure it out,” he assured her, a sentiment that Foster found immensely comforting during a time filled with anxiety and uncertainty.
Initially diagnosed with colon cancer, Foster faced the prospect of recovery when she was unexpectedly diagnosed with breast cancer. “In the end, it was a tougher haul than my first experience, but I am proud to say my last treatment for breast cancer was in June 2019,” she reflects. Her experiences have inspired her to partner with the Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation this fall to raise funds for essential hospital equipment needed for diagnosing and treating cancer patients.
Community Support Amplified by Local Lions Club
To enhance the fundraising efforts, the Fort Langley Lions Club has pledged to match every donation made this season, up to $40,000. This initiative aims to ensure that local medical teams have access to the necessary tools to provide the highest standard of care, particularly as the demand for procedures continues to rise.
As Foster emphasizes, her journey has highlighted the importance of resilience and the crucial role of healthcare professionals. “This journey taught me so much about resilience, about faith, and the power of the love of my family and friends. But most of all, my experiences opened my eyes to the dedication and compassion of the doctors and nurses at Langley Memorial Hospital,” she states.
The community’s support is vital, especially as charities face challenges due to the ongoing Canada Post strike, which could impact fundraising efforts at a critical time of year. The Langley Community Health & Hospital Foundation relies on donations to fund medical equipment, patient comfort items, and staff education programs.
To ensure contributions reach the Foundation, residents can donate securely online at LCHHFoundation.com/donate. Donors will also receive a tax receipt for the 2025 tax year, further encouraging community involvement.
Foster expresses her gratitude for the care she received. “A decade later, when I look back at the whirlwind journey of my health and recovery, I’m so grateful that I was able to receive care here, close to home,” she says. Her heartfelt message serves as a rallying cry for the community to come together in support of their local hospital and the vital services it provides.
