Congregation Emanu-El Hosts 10th Annual Big Latke Lunch in Victoria
Members of Congregation Emanu-El in Victoria celebrated a significant milestone on December 22 by hosting the 10th annual Big Latke Lunch at Our Place, a local non-profit organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations. The event, which brings together community members to enjoy traditional potato latkes, aims to spread joy and warmth during the Hanukkah season.
Rabbi Eli Herb, of Congregation Emanu-El, expressed his enthusiasm for the occasion, stating, “It’s a pleasure and a privilege to bring some festival joy and spread some Hanukkah light with our neighbours and friends at Our Place.” This event not only serves delicious food but also fosters a sense of community among attendees.
Hanukkah, an eight-day festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the second century B.C., is marked by the lighting of candles and the sharing of traditional foods. One of the most cherished dishes during this celebration is the potato latke, which is typically served with sour cream or applesauce.
Congregation Emanu-El engages in this annual tradition, preparing to serve latkes alongside soup, salad, and various condiments to as many as 450 citizens from the Greater Victoria area. The preparation requires notable quantities of ingredients, including approximately 50 kg of potatoes, 15 litres of sour cream, 100 litres of vegetable soup, and 50 heads of lettuce.
This year’s Big Latke Lunch not only highlights the culinary aspects of Hanukkah but also reinforces the importance of community solidarity. Events like this provide an opportunity for those in need to gather, enjoy a meal, and feel supported by their local community.
As the celebration continues to grow, the impact of the Big Latke Lunch resonates well beyond the kitchen. It represents a commitment to serving others, a core value that is deeply embedded in the tradition of Congregation Emanu-El and its outreach efforts.
This initiative exemplifies how food can serve as a bridge, connecting diverse groups within the community and fostering a spirit of togetherness during the holiday season.
