DeKalb Library Hosts Third Annual Day of the Dead Celebration
The DeKalb Public Library is set to host its third annual Day of the Dead Celebration on November 1, 2023, from 14:00 to 17:00. This free event will take place at the library located at 309 Oak Street, and aims to honor the traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates and remembers loved ones who have passed away.
The festivities will commence with a welcoming procession, starting at El Jimador and making its way to the library. This procession serves as a tribute to those who have died, embodying the spirit of the celebration. Attendees will have the opportunity to view ofrendas—traditional altars created by residents of DeKalb to honor their deceased loved ones.
In addition to the ofrendas, the celebration will feature a variety of engaging activities, including crafts, live performances, and interactive sessions. Attendees can also participate in a discussion at WNIJ-HOLA, where they can share personal reflections on what the Day of the Dead signifies to them.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase from local food trucks, including Nina’s Tacos and Tako Sushi. As the event draws to a close, the Northern Illinois University Mariachi Band will perform an after-hours concert at 17:30, adding a vibrant cultural touch to the day’s festivities.
For further information regarding the event, interested individuals can contact the library via email at [email protected] or call 815-756-9568, extension 1701. The DeKalb Day of the Dead Celebration promises to be a meaningful occasion for community members to come together in remembrance and celebration.
