Eight-Year-Old Ava Henley Sets Record Swimming Across Halifax Harbour

An eight-year-old girl, Ava Henley, has made history by becoming the youngest person to swim across Halifax Harbour in support of The United Way. Ava completed the swim on September 4, 2023, showcasing not only her remarkable determination but also her commitment to a charitable cause.
Ava participated alongside her father, Andrew Henley, who has an extensive background in long-distance swimming. Having completed the Halifax Harbour swim five times previously, Andrew noted that this particular event was especially memorable. “The last swim was probably the most memorable for me because this is the first time in my life I had my daughter follow me,” he reflected.
The pair dedicated their summer to training together, where Andrew emphasized the mental aspects of long-distance swimming. “I was teaching her over the summer that long-distance swimming is more of a mind game more than it is a physical game,” he explained. This preparation paid off as Ava faced her initial nerves head-on.
Before the race, Ava admitted to feeling scared. “I was really nervous on the boat,” she recalled. However, she motivated herself with a determined mindset, asserting, “I can’t quit now because I’m on the boat, so I did it.” Her resilience allowed her to complete the swim in approximately 32 minutes, significantly exceeding the qualifying requirement to swim 1,500 metres in 40 minutes.
The Nova Scotia Harbour Swim for The United Way is an annual event that raises funds for various community programs. This year’s campaign ran from September 2 to September 5, 2023, featuring swim sites in locations such as Shelburne, Chester, Halifax, Sydney, St. Peter’s, and Pictou. The Halifax Harbour swim specifically took place at 11:30 a.m. on September 4.
Participants were required to raise a minimum of $150 in pledges to qualify for the event. Ava’s accomplishment not only highlights her personal achievement but also contributes to the community effort fostered by The United Way. Andrew expressed immense pride in his daughter’s determination and success, stating, “I’m so incredibly proud of what she’s done.”
The inspiring story of Ava Henley serves as a reminder of the impact young individuals can have in their communities while also pursuing their passions. With the support of her father and the broader community, Ava has set a remarkable precedent for future participants in the Halifax Harbour swim.
