Eskasoni Community Celebrates First Responders with Emotional Parade

A heartfelt parade took place on March 6, 2024, in the Eskasoni First Nation to honour the contributions of local first responders. The event recognized the dedication of firefighters, RCMP officers, paramedics, and mental health teams, drawing a large crowd eager to express gratitude. Attendees filled the powwow grounds, where they shared meals and stories, celebrating those who serve the community.

The parade commenced at Goat Island, progressing through town to the Kiknu Centre, where residents gathered to show their appreciation. As the procession passed, spectators waved and shouted words of encouragement. The event culminated at the powwow grounds, where participants enjoyed barbecued food and watched children play on inflatable attractions.

Community Acknowledges First Responders

The emotional atmosphere was palpable as many speakers recounted personal experiences. Esmond “Blue” Marshall, a District 3 councillor and career first responder, shared a poignant story from 15 years ago when he suffered a heart attack and credited paramedic Neil Derrick-Simon for saving his life. “I had passed for 12 full minutes, and my hero never left me. My hero is here today,” Marshall stated, pointing to Derrick-Simon, who has served as a first responder for 35 years.

Derrick-Simon began his career at just 16 years old, responding to emergencies from a young age. His mother, Wilma Simon, was also celebrated at the event for her 35 years as a local dispatcher. Reflecting on her family’s commitment to first responder roles, she acknowledged the significant changes in the field due to advancements in technology.

Chief Highlights the Importance of Support

Chief Leroy Denny, a certified member of the volunteer fire department, emphasized the importance of recognizing the tireless efforts of those who respond to emergencies. He noted the emotional toll that such work can take, stating, “It’s 24/7 non-stop. They’re tired, and we need to give back our energy to support them.” This past year has been particularly challenging for the community, with numerous incidents requiring first responders’ attention.

Denny also acknowledged the need for community support for former first responders, many of whom faced challenges without the resources available today. “They didn’t have the supports and services that we have today for first responders,” he remarked. He extended thanks to social workers, mental health teams, and crisis responders, highlighting the collaborative effort required to foster community well-being.

The parade and appreciation event received positive feedback from participants. RCMP Sgt. Ian Campbell expressed gratitude for the turnout, saying, “We’re very grateful. This is a great turnout, and we feel appreciated.”

Twelve-year-old Mary Lewis attended the event to honour her uncle, a former first responder. “I want to be here to show how grateful I am to everyone,” she said, reflecting the community’s sentiments.

The emotional connections and gratitude expressed during the parade highlight the deep appreciation the community holds for those who dedicate their lives to service.
