Facebook Group Connects Over 3,000 Women on Vancouver Island

A Facebook group dedicated to women on Vancouver Island has rapidly expanded, fostering connections among over 3,000 members in just seven months. The group, launched by Trish Westeveld, aims to create a supportive environment where women can engage in various activities and form meaningful relationships.
Building Community through Connection
Westeveld created the Vancouver Island Senior Ladies group out of a personal need for community. Initially uncertain about the response, she is now pleased to see thousands of women joining and sharing their experiences. “I looked and looked and couldn’t find what I was looking for, and now I’ve found what I was looking for – and it seems like it’s what everyone else was looking for as well,” she stated, reflecting on the group’s impact.
The group has become a hub for women across the island, allowing them to organize local events and activities. From walks and communal meals to book clubs and art exhibitions, the focus remains on fostering connections. Westeveld ensures that new members are vetted to maintain a safe and welcoming space, emphasizing that the group is exclusively for women.
Empowering Women and Creating Friendships
Members like Rosie Tyskerud have found joy and excitement through participation. “I signed up and I went the next day for the first walk, and I came home and I phoned my husband about it and my kids, and everybody was so excited that I found something,” she shared. This sentiment echoes throughout the group, where many women have reported finding friendships and support.
Another member, Judy Kauwell, described a profound connection made during her first outing. “I met a girl who had cancer, and I was just going through the process of finding out if I had it myself, so we connected really strongly on our very first visit out,” she recounted. Such experiences highlight the group’s role in providing emotional support and companionship.
As the Vancouver Island Senior Ladies continues to grow, Westeveld remains optimistic about its potential. “I hope to have this grow and be more. The sky is the limit to where I think I can go with this,” she expressed. Her vision reflects the aspirations of many members seeking a space to engage with one another and enrich their lives.
This vibrant community not only addresses the social needs of its members but also reinforces the importance of connection among seniors on Vancouver Island. As the group flourishes, it exemplifies how digital platforms can foster real-world relationships and support networks.
