Hillhurst Hosts Inclusive Halloween Village for Over 1,500 Kids

A vibrant community event took place in Hillhurst on October 14, 2023, as over 1,500 children participated in an early Halloween celebration aimed at enhancing accessibility. The event, organized by Treat Accessibly, transformed the neighborhood into a festive Halloween Village, allowing families to enjoy the holiday in an inclusive atmosphere.
Families gathered as neighbors set up tables along the streets, distributing candy and creating a welcoming environment for all children, regardless of their abilities. The initiative emphasized the importance of inclusivity during a season often marked by festivities and joy.
Siena Padulo, co-founder of Treat Accessibly, highlighted the significance of such events, stating, “Having one of these villages shows to both people that have disabilities and those that don’t have disabilities that there can be an inclusive event for all — and that it’s really simple to do.” This sentiment resonated with many attendees, reflecting the community’s commitment to ensuring that everyone can experience the joys of Halloween.
For families like that of Aaron Li, whose son has cerebral palsy, the event was particularly meaningful. “He’s excited, and he just gets to come out and just be able to enjoy what a kid should be able to enjoy on Halloween,” Li expressed, capturing the essence of the day.
The Halloween Village not only provided a platform for fun but also fostered a sense of belonging among the participants. The initiative underscores how simple actions, such as providing accessible pathways and inclusive activities, can significantly enhance community engagement and participation.
As the holiday approaches, events like the Halloween Village serve as reminders of the importance of inclusivity in all aspects of life. By celebrating together, Hillhurst has demonstrated that accessibility in festivities can be achieved with creativity and community spirit.
