Historic Queen Anne Home in Preston Listed for $899,900
A stunning Queen Anne-style home in Preston has been listed for sale at $899,900. Located at 543 Queenston Rd., this historic property serves as a vivid reminder of Cambridge’s architectural heritage. The listing was officially posted on October 24, 2025, and an open house is scheduled for November 2 from 14:00 to 16:00.
Designed by the esteemed architect Frederick William Mellish in 1905, this residence captures the essence of early 20th-century design. Mellish, a key figure in Cambridge’s architectural development, is known for several significant structures, including the original Galt Hospital and the Carnegie Library. His work often showcased a blend of contemporary trends and local character.
Walking through the front door of this two-and-a-half-storey house transports visitors back in time. “Right when you walk through the front door, you feel like you’ve stepped back in time,” noted Shaw Hasyj from Shaw Realty Group. The interior features intricate gingerbread trim, leaded and transom windows, and even a functioning turn-style doorbell from the original construction.
Over the years, only three families have inhabited this home, with the current owners meticulously modernizing the property while preserving its historic charm. The Cambridge municipal heritage advisory committee has recognized the house as culturally significant, underscoring its importance to the community.
Inside, the living and dining areas boast bright, high ceilings and are connected by glass-panel pocket doors. The dining room features a bay window bench and an original built-in china cabinet, while the living room showcases a striking fireplace once converted to coal. “You can tell whoever built this had money,” remarked Hasyj, highlighting the quality craftsmanship evident throughout the home.
The second floor includes three bedrooms and a family bath, which retains its claw-foot tub and pedestal sink. The unfinished attic offers a versatile space that could be transformed into a luxurious suite, creative studio, or spacious family room. Many original details remain intact, including pegged oak floors and brass door hardware.
Recent updates have focused on preservation rather than drastic change. In 2023, the exterior cedar shakes, chimneys, and window casings were restored, along with mechanical upgrades that enhance the home’s functionality while maintaining its integrity. “It’s been updated where it matters,” stated Hasyj. “The structure, the systems, the woodwork — it’s all solid. It still feels authentic.”
Surrounding the home is a substantial lot measuring 58 feet by 143 feet, adorned with gardens shaded by century-old maple and oak trees. A detached garage is situated at the end of a lengthy driveway, adding to the property’s appeal. The neighborhood mirrors the character of the home: quiet, stable, and steeped in history. “People here don’t move often,” Hasyj explained. “The last family was here for 60 years. It’s that kind of place — big trees, quiet streets, old homes with soul.”
The price of this property was determined after careful analysis of comparable homes in the area, factoring in updates and lot size. According to GeoWarehouse, the house last sold for $810,000 in May 2022, while the previous owners purchased it for $13,000 in January 1962.
Shaw Hasyj emphasized that the ideal buyer for this property is a family seeking ample space, character, and a historic neighborhood. As interest in unique, historic homes continues to grow, this Queen Anne beauty stands as a remarkable link to Preston’s past.
