Hospice North Hastings Hosts Touching Lights of Love Memorial
Hospice North Hastings organized its second annual **Lights of Love Memorial** on **November 29, 2023**, at its facility located at **27 Bridge Street North** in Bancroft, Ontario. This event created a heartfelt space for local residents to honour and remember their loved ones who have passed away. Participants were invited to purchase a light donation that adorned six trees, symbolizing love, loss, and cherished memories.
The memorial coincided with **National Hospice and Palliative Care Month**, underscoring the significance of palliative care in the community. Stacy Pitts, a representative from Hospice North Hastings, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support the event received. “The event saw a touching addition this year, a slideshow featuring photos and names submitted by families and friends,” said Pitts. Each light on the trees represented the enduring connection families have with those they have lost.
Hospice North Hastings operates as a **four-bed residential hospice**, staffed by Registered Practical Nurses, Personal Support Workers, and a grief and bereavement counsellor, with oversight from Executive Director **Keitha McNeil** and Medical Director **Dr. Micayla Ahearn**. The organization aims to provide compassionate end-of-life care while respecting the final wishes of patients, which have included hosting weddings and birthday parties, as well as facilitating visits from beloved pets.
The motto of Hospice North Hastings, “caring where there is no curing,” reflects their commitment to supporting patients and families during challenging times. Although partially funded by the **Ontario government**, the hospice relies heavily on community support for its operations. Pitts acknowledged the local community’s contributions, stating, “We value each donation, we value everyone who was able to attend, we value the love and support shared by many.”
This year’s memorial honoured **130 loved ones**, raising just over **$5,600** through donations. The Joyful Bell Ringers provided musical accompaniment, enhancing the emotional atmosphere of the evening. Pitts noted that local businesses also played a crucial role in the event’s success, emphasizing, “We wouldn’t be here without the support of our entire community and surrounding areas.”
The evening was guided by a quote from **Albert Einstein**: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” Pitts reflected on this sentiment, highlighting the event’s purpose of making a difference in the community. The Lights of Love Memorial continues to serve as a testament to community spirit and support.
Hospice North Hastings remains dedicated to its mission of providing comfort and care to those at the end of their lives, and events like the Lights of Love Memorial play a vital role in fostering connection and remembrance within the community.
