Langley Advance Times Readers’ Choice Awards Engage 25,680 Voters

In a vibrant display of community engagement, this year’s Langley Advance Times Readers’ Choice Awards attracted a remarkable 25,680 voters. Among them, Sangeet Poudel was selected in a random draw to receive a prize of $500 in Otter Co-op gift cards, redeemable at all Otter locations. Poudel, a student working part-time in a warehouse, expressed his delight upon winning, stating, “I was really happy. And I checked where I can use that.” He has already utilized the gift cards at a department store on 248 Street, purchasing clothing and shoes.

The Readers’ Choice Awards underwent a significant revamp in 2023 to enhance the nomination and voting processes. Publisher Shaulene Walsh explained that the awards began with a nomination phase in May, during which the community submitted 29,000 nominations. From these nominations, the top ten in each category advanced to the voting stage in June, allowing the public to select their top three favorites from each group.

The awards highlighted the strong community interest, with over 25,000 votes cast. The categories that garnered the most attention included real estate, legal services, and real estate brokerages, alongside unexpected favorites like bakeries and cocktail establishments. Walsh emphasized the importance of this participation, stating, “The huge number of votes shows the value the public places on the annual awards program run by the local community news source.”

The contest is designed to spotlight only local entities, allowing community members to support their favorite businesses actively.
