Lovina Eicher Celebrates Family Milestones and Community Spirit

In a heartfelt update from Lovina Eicher, the well-known Old Order Amish writer and cook, she reflects on significant family milestones and community events that have unfolded recently. Most notably, Lovina joyously announces the birth of her granddaughter, Brooklyn Nyah, born on August 16, 2023. Baby Brooklyn weighed 5 pounds, 6 ounces and measured 19 inches long, marking a new chapter for Lovina’s family.
Celebrating Anniversaries and New Beginnings
This week also marked the tenth wedding anniversary of Lovina’s daughter, Elizabeth, and her husband, Tim. Their decade together has been filled with love and growth, producing four children: Abigail, Timothy, Allison, and Andrea. Lovina expresses her gratitude for Tim, who has been a kind partner to Elizabeth, and she wishes them many more years of happiness.
The family gathered for a church picnic, held by their neighbors, where they enjoyed a feast that featured deep-fried fish, a variety of casseroles, salads, and desserts. All but three of the church district’s 22 families attended, enjoying games like croquet and volleyball, alongside a bouncy house for the younger children.
As summer transitions into fall, Lovina’s grandchildren are eagerly preparing to return to school. On August 18, eight of them will start classes, with Abigail and Kaitlyn entering the third grade, while Timothy will embark on his first-grade journey. The excitement is palpable, especially for Abigail, who shares her name with her teacher.
Community Support and Personal Loss
Amid these celebrations, Lovina faced a poignant loss with the death of Midnight, her horse of ten years. Midnight had been a reliable companion, trained by Lovina’s husband, Joe. The couple was devastated to find her unexpectedly deceased, and a veterinarian suggested that heatstroke, due to high temperatures and humidity, may have been the cause. Joe, who has trained all their horses, now faces challenges with his health that prevent him from continuing this work.
Looking ahead, a church member is currently training Midnight’s two-year-old colt, Jett, in hopes of maintaining the legacy of safety and reliability that Midnight epitomized.
This week, Lovina and her daughters have been busy canning peaches, processing over 49 quarts with fruit generously donated by their neighbors, Joas and Susan. The family’s efforts highlight the importance of community support, as peaches can be costly to purchase.
As Lovina prepares for the upcoming Sunday church service at her son Joseph and Grace’s home, she looks forward to sharing her baked goods with the congregation. Family connections and community bonding are at the heart of Lovina’s life, as she finds joy in both new beginnings and cherished memories.
Readers can connect with Lovina through her books, including “The Cherished Table,” “The Essential Amish Cookbook,” and “Amish Family Recipes,” for a taste of her culinary insights and family traditions.
“Until next week… God bless!”
