Manitoba Launches Circle of Courage Awards for WWII Veterans
The province of Manitoba is set to establish the inaugural Circle of Courage Awards, recognizing the contributions of Second World War veterans as their numbers dwindle. This initiative aims to honor all veterans and military personnel, with a particular emphasis on those who served during the Second World War. The awards will be presented two days after Remembrance Day, underscoring the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by these individuals.
Honoring Contributions of Veterans
During a recent news conference, Premier Wab Kinew emphasized the significance of highlighting the contributions of World War II veterans while they are still alive. He stated, “While we have the veterans of World War II still with us, I think it’s really important to focus on highlighting their contributions.” Kinew noted that the post-war consensus established a framework for international cooperation, which remains relevant today amid ongoing global challenges.
Between 1939 and 1945, over 1.1 million Canadians served in the Second World War, with approximately 42,000 losing their lives and around 52,000 sustaining injuries. The impact of these veterans continues to resonate, and their stories serve as vital reminders of the sacrifices made for peace and freedom.
The Current State of Veterans
According to data from Veterans Affairs Canada, there are currently 5,649 veterans alive who served in the Second World War and the Korean War, which occurred from 1950 to 1953. This number includes 4,769 men and 880 women. The average age of these veterans is now around 100 years, further highlighting the urgency of recognizing their contributions through initiatives like the Circle of Courage Awards.
This awards program represents a significant step in ensuring that the sacrifices of these veterans are not forgotten. By celebrating their legacy, Manitoba hopes to inspire future generations to appreciate and learn from the lessons of the past.
