Manitoba Playwright Ian Ross, 57, Leaves Lasting Legacy
Ian Ross, a prominent Métis-Ojibway playwright, passed away at the age of 57. Renowned for his impactful contributions to the arts, Ross made history as the first Indigenous playwright to receive the Governor General’s Award for English-language drama, awarded for his acclaimed play Farewel. Many in Manitoba are mourning the loss of Ross, who was affectionately known as “Joe from Winnipeg” on local radio. In a heartfelt tribute, Premier Wab Kinew expressed gratitude for Ross’s influence, stating that he had significantly contributed to making Manitoba a better place. Kinew also noted that Ross nominated him as the NDP candidate for Fort Rouge nearly ten years ago, highlighting their longstanding relationship.
