Men’s Gathering in Rankin Inlet Fosters Community Spirit
On October 16, 2023, a gathering for men in Rankin Inlet brought together 22 participants for an afternoon of camaraderie and enjoyable activities. Organised by the men’s committee chairperson, Noel Kaludjak, the event aimed to provide a relaxed environment for men in the community to connect over food and games.
Kaludjak proposed the gathering to his board, receiving immediate approval. He collaborated with the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre, where Jamesie Alariaq enthusiastically agreed to assist in the planning process. The goal was to create a stress-free atmosphere where men could unwind and enjoy each other’s company.
The event featured a variety of traditional foods, including caribou stew, caribou soup, and fresh bannock, all prepared by two hired cooks. Participants were welcomed with a selection of drinks, including tea and coffee. Kaludjak noted that the culinary offerings were well-received, describing them as “very good.”
As attendees arrived, they signed up for the event and received pull tickets for a chance to win prizes. With 22 signatures recorded, excitement grew when the bus transporting some participants arrived, along with those who drove their own vehicles. Kaludjak shared a memorable moment when an Elder made the journey by Honda to join the gathering.
The gathering took place at Char River, within a newly constructed building designed for such community events by the Pulaarvik Kablu Friendship Centre. Although the weather included some rain, Kaludjak assured that it did not dampen spirits. “Everyone had a really, really good time,” he stated.
Once the meal concluded, participants engaged in various games and conversations, catching up with friends and acquaintances. Kaludjak expressed hope that this successful gathering would be the first of many, fostering a stronger sense of community among the men of Rankin Inlet. The event not only provided entertainment but also an essential opportunity for social connection, something that Kaludjak and his team clearly valued.
