Three municipalities in Metro Vancouver have recently installed permanent crosswalks dedicated to honoring the service and sacrifices of Canadian Armed Forces veterans. The cities of Surrey, Richmond, and Maple Ridge have each unveiled these symbolic crossings, strategically situated near significant locations for Remembrance Day ceremonies, including civic cenotaphs and Royal Canadian Legion halls.

The most recent installation took place in Surrey over the weekend, timed precisely before Remembrance Day on November 11. The crosswalk is located in the 17500 block of 57 Avenue in Cloverdale, adjacent to the local Royal Canadian Legion. This placement holds deep significance, as it reflects the community’s commitment to honoring those who have served.

The crosswalk is painted in red and white, featuring a silhouette of a kneeling soldier alongside a maple leaf, with the poignant words “Lest We Forget.” Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke emphasized the importance of such tributes in her statement: “Every November, we pause to remember those who served and sacrificed for Canada. This crosswalk in the colours of our flag is a visible tribute to their courage and dedication.”

Richmond followed suit in September, unveiling its own crossing at the intersection of No. 3 Road and Anderson Road. This location is just steps from Richmond City Hall and the city’s cenotaph. Similar to Surrey’s design, the Richmond crosswalk features a red maple leaf and the solemn message, “Lest We Forget.”

Maple Ridge took a bold step in late August by installing the largest of the three tributes along 224 Street near Brown Avenue, also close to the local Legion. This vibrant red crosswalk incorporates the familiar maple leaf, a soldier silhouette, and the words “Lest We Forget” as well.

The new crossings not only serve as striking public art installations but also act as enduring reminders of the sacrifices made for Canada’s freedoms. Mayor Dan Ruimy of Maple Ridge remarked, “This crosswalk serves as a visible and daily reminder of the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our country. By honouring our veterans in this meaningful way, we are expressing our gratitude and deep respect.”

These installations are designed to ensure that, long after official ceremonies conclude, the act of remembrance remains woven into the everyday life of the community. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to honoring the past while strengthening connections between history, community, and the future.
