New Women’s Shelter Planned in London to Expand Support Services

The operator of multiple women’s shelters in London, Ontario, is moving forward with plans to establish a new facility aimed at better serving women and children fleeing violence. Anova has issued a request for proposals to replace its current shelter located on Wellington Road, which has provided refuge to thousands since it opened in 1992. The existing shelter, previously known as Women’s Community House, alongside another on Clarke Road, currently offers 67 beds, but demand continues to exceed capacity.
According to Jessie Rodger, the executive director of Anova, the need for additional space has become pressing. “Unfortunately, we are having to turn people away. Sometimes there is a wait time for people to get into counseling or to see an outreach counselor,” she stated. The organization has concluded that replacing the Wellington Road shelter is essential for future operations.
The Wellington Road facility has served its purpose well, but Rodger noted that it is beginning to show signs of age. “It’s been a really wonderful building, and it served its purpose. It’s just getting a little bit older. Things are starting to fall apart,” she explained. The new shelter is expected to incorporate updated design elements that align with the latest practices in supporting women and children in crisis.
Plans for a Comprehensive Support Centre
Anova’s vision for the new shelter includes integrating a sexual assault centre, which is currently located in the Goodwill Industries building on Horton Street. Rodger estimated that the total costs for this project could reach into the “tens of millions” of dollars. The organization has already secured provincial approval for a needs assessment, which indicates that a space of approximately 17,000 square feet will be necessary to accommodate 40 beds and the additional services.
“We kind of assessed that perhaps it was around 17,000 square feet that we would need. So, it is a pretty large space with 40 beds. And then you know, a sexual assault center along with that,” Rodger elaborated. Once proposals are collected, Anova hopes to garner support from all levels of government and the local community to ensure the project comes to fruition.
The need for such facilities is underscored by ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable populations. Anova aims to provide a comprehensive support system that not only offers shelter but also facilitates access to vital services. As planning advances, the organization encourages collaboration to address the pressing needs of women and children in the region.
