Nominations Open for 2026 Burns Lake Citizen of the Year Award
Nominations are officially open for the 2026 Bill Konkin Citizen of the Year Award, a recognition that highlights the exceptional contributions of community members in and around Burns Lake. This prestigious award, named after the late William Konkin, a former school principal in Burns Lake, has been celebrating local volunteers since its inception in 1973.
Over the past 53 years, the award has recognized a total of 37 individuals and 16 couples for their steadfast commitment to enhancing community life. In addition, three individuals and two couples have been honored as Citizen of the Decade for their long-term service and dedication.
Recognizing Dedication to Community Service
The award aims to celebrate those who have significantly impacted civic, cultural, social, or charitable causes through their leadership and mentorship. Many recipients have organized events or supported vulnerable groups, often dedicating years of service without seeking public recognition.
Recent honorees include Pat Unruh, the 2024 Citizen of the Year, who received nominations from an unprecedented number of Burns Lake residents. Unruh has been recognized for her efforts in maintaining the town’s cleanliness and her volunteer work at the local thrift store. In 2023, Norm and Marian Martens were acknowledged for their extensive volunteer work, including their contributions to Island Gospel, where they prepare meals for seniors and funerals, as well as their involvement with the Ootsa Lake Bible Camp.
How to Nominate a Candidate
The nominations must be submitted by February 28, 2026, and should be sent to:
