North Okanagan Teens Compete for Youth Athlete of the Year

Two exceptional teenagers from the North Okanagan region are vying for the prestigious title of Youth Athlete of the Year. Jillian Donald, a blackbelt at Sundance Taekwon-do in Vernon, and Caden O’Dwyer, a football player at Clarence Fulton Secondary School, have advanced to the next stage of an online contest. Currently, Donald ranks second in her group, while O’Dwyer leads his group, with the athletes garnering votes to move forward in the competition. The final winner will receive $25,000 and a feature in a 3BRAND advertisement in Sports Illustrated.
A Glimpse into Their Achievements
O’Dwyer expressed his passion for sports, highlighting the “hustle, improvement, understanding, and intensity” that it brings him. He relishes the support of enthusiastic crowds, the thrill of scoring touchdowns, and the camaraderie found in teamwork. His father has been a significant influence in his life, inspiring him both on and off the field. “He pushed me beyond myself to be who he always knew I could be, and I am a greater person for it,” O’Dwyer stated. He shared that his father instilled the value of perseverance, teaching him how to accept defeat while encouraging resilience through shared workouts and coaching.
On the other hand, Donald’s journey has been remarkable, particularly given her diagnosis with type one diabetes at the age of six. She is set to represent Team Canada at the International Taekwon-do Federation World Championships in Croatia, taking place from October 7 to 11, 2023. Reflecting on her proudest moment, Donald recalled achieving her first-degree blackbelt in March. Following this accomplishment, she flew across the country to compete in the national championships, where she clinched a national champion title and qualified for national team selections. “I made Team Canada just two months after my blackbelt test, while living with type one diabetes,” she shared.
As the competition progresses, both athletes are appealing to the public for support. Voting is open, allowing fans to cast their ballots for their favorite competitors. To vote for Donald, visit her profile page. For O’Dwyer, you can also participate by visiting his page.
This competition not only highlights the individual talents of these athletes but also emphasizes the importance of community support and encouragement in their sporting endeavors. As they continue to excel in their respective fields, their stories serve as an inspiration to many in the North Okanagan region and beyond.
