Northern Ontario Author Celebrates Kindness with New Book

A long-time resident of Sault Ste. Marie, Peter Vaudry, has released a new book that embodies his belief in the power of kindness within his community. Celebrating his 81st birthday this year, Vaudry penned the book as a response to what he perceives as a rising trend of rudeness and unkindness in public and online interactions. He aims to promote a culture of kindness that he feels is essential to the character of Sault Ste. Marie.
Rooted in Community Spirit
Vaudry expressed his concerns about social behavior, stating, “I just wanted to be proactive about protecting our community from that corrosive potential of that behaviour.” He emphasizes that kindness has always been a core value among the residents, or “Saultites,” who embody this trait in their daily lives. “Kindness is the representation of the totality of the kindness abounding in the community, past and present,” he added.
The book reflects on Vaudry’s childhood experiences in the Bayview neighbourhood and the profound influence his mother had on his understanding of kindness. He described her belief in the “generosity of spirit,” emphasizing that true kindness involves giving without expecting anything in return. “My mother believed that you should not expect any kind of return or compensation,” he noted. “There is no condemnation, no criticism, there is no advice giving. Kindness is the only intent.”
Vaudry recognized this essence of kindness in himself at a young age, and he believes it is a quality that should be celebrated within the community. He launched the book on Monday, with proceeds directed to the local non-profit organization, St. Vincent Place. He chose this charity because of the assistance he received during his upbringing. “We had a lot of help — and we needed help,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of community support.
Symbolism and Community Impact
On the cover of his book, Vaudry features an image titled “Spirits Rising,” which depicts the city’s waterfront. This photograph symbolizes a significant moment in the community’s history, representing the unity and efforts to save Algoma Steel. Vaudry believes this image captures the resilient spirit of Sault Ste. Marie, a city he continues to call home.
“St. Vincent Place is an example of one of the kindnesses in Sault Ste. Marie. They are there to help people who have a need and they try to meet that need,” he explained, underscoring the importance of local charities in fostering kindness within the community.
Through his book and the associated charitable efforts, Vaudry hopes to inspire others to recognize and practice kindness, reinforcing its vital role in building a supportive and compassionate community. As he reflects on his life experiences, he encourages others to embrace the spirit of kindness that has defined Sault Ste. Marie throughout its history.
