Ontario Artist’s ‘Born Ready’ T-Shirt Goes Viral in World Series

The custom t-shirt designed by Toronto-based artist Kit Weyman has become a sensation among fans of the Toronto Blue Jays, particularly during the World Series. The shirt, featuring a childhood image of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. alongside the quote “born ready,” was prominently showcased by Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette during Game 2 of the World Series held at the Rogers Centre last weekend. The design quickly attracted significant attention, also being spotted on Guerrero Jr. himself and Toronto’s Mayor Olivia Chow.

Weyman, a dedicated Blue Jays supporter, was inspired to create the t-shirt after watching Guerrero Jr.’s emotional interview following the Jays’ Game 6 victory against the Seattle Mariners in the American League Championship Series (ALCS). During the interview, Guerrero Jr. expressed his eagerness for the upcoming Game 7, stating, “I was born ready. I was born ready, and I want it all for this city,” as the crowd erupted in enthusiasm.

The design cleverly combines Guerrero Jr.’s quote with a nostalgic photograph of him at the age of three, standing on the field with his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., during a Montreal Expos game in 2002. This iconic moment, captured by retired Canadian Press photographer Paul Chiasson, shows the father-son duo in matching jerseys tipping their hats to the cheering audience. The photo resurfaced just as the Blue Jays made their run for the World Series, further boosting the t-shirt’s popularity.

Weyman’s artistic vision resonated with fans who have since embraced the “born ready” phrase as a rallying cry for the team. The t-shirts, which Weyman sells online, have seen rapid sales, with limited stock remaining. The high demand has even led to counterfeit versions of the design appearing on the market.

In an interview, Weyman highlighted the community aspect of his work: “For me, it’s always about uplifting the city and this community that’s given so much to me. This is the best city in the world.”

Weyman’s journey to get the t-shirts into the hands of fans began while he was in New York City last week. He had a last-minute idea to print 50 shirts, intending to distribute them to friends and family for a World Series viewing party. When his cousin invited him to watch Game 1 at the Rogers Centre, he decided to expedite his plans.

In a rush to catch the game, Weyman booked a flight out of Newark Liberty International Airport, only to realize he was actually departing from LaGuardia Airport. Faced with the prospect of missing the game, he purchased a new ticket for an additional $450. Despite his frustration, the check-in agent’s reassuring words stuck with him: “It happened for a reason.”

While at the airport, Weyman began sharing his t-shirt design with fellow Jays fans. Remarkably, he connected with the brother of John Schneider, the Blue Jays general manager. The two hit it off, and Weyman later delivered t-shirts to the Schneider family at the game, including one for Guerrero Jr. with a handwritten note that read, “The city is yours, bring it home.”

As the Blue Jays prepare for a crucial Game 7 of the World Series tonight at the Rogers Centre, Weyman’s t-shirt has become more than just merchandise; it symbolizes hope and community spirit among fans rallying around their team.
