The annual Ride for Refuge event is set to take place on October 4, 2024, at the Alfred Jenkins Field House in Prince Albert. Organized by Catholic Family Services, the event invites community members to participate in a walk or bike ride, with proceeds aimed at supporting free and low-cost counselling programs.

Participants can check in starting at 10 a.m., with opening remarks scheduled for 10:45 a.m. and the rides and walks commencing at 11 a.m.. Attendees can choose between a 2.5 km or 5 km walk, or a 10 km or 20 km bike ride. Following the activities, a light meal will be served at noon, with closing acknowledgments taking place around 1 p.m.

Jeannette Eddolls, a board member of Catholic Family Services, emphasized that the event serves a greater purpose than just fundraising. “Ride for Refuge happens across Canada, but here it’s about making sure every person knows they can come to Catholic Family Services for help,” she stated. “People aren’t turned away if they can’t pay. These funds help cover the cost of services so people can get the support they need.”

Funds raised from the event will remain in Prince Albert, directly contributing to counselling sessions, staff resources, and group programs. Catholic Family Services offers a variety of services, including individual, couples, and family counselling, as well as workshops addressing issues such as grief, depression, anxiety, anger, family separation, interpersonal conflict, and domestic violence.

This year marks the fourth time Prince Albert has hosted the Ride for Refuge. Eddolls acknowledged the extensive planning involved, noting, “There’s an extreme amount of networking and public relations. This year we’re fortunate to have a wealth of volunteers, which will make the event run smoothly.” Efforts to promote the event have included posters, word of mouth, and outreach through schools and churches.

As of this week, the local ride has attracted 17 teams and 83 participants, supported by 43 volunteers. They have collectively raised over $47,000, nearing the original fundraising goal of $51,000. Eddolls expressed hope that participants will find both joy and purpose in their involvement. “I think people will feel good knowing they supported a very good cause,” she added. “And for the day itself, I hope they enjoy their walk or ride, the food, and the chance to visit with others.”

Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle, wear proper footwear or a bike and helmet, and dress appropriately for the weather. The event will provide rest stops along the routes, offering snacks and drinks. Route marshals and support drivers will be present to assist, and clear signage will guide participants throughout the course.

Children aged 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and pets are not permitted, except for approved service animals. While there is no registration fee, fundraising is strongly encouraged. Those who raise $150 or more (or $75 for youth under 18) will receive a RIDE T-shirt at check-in, while supplies last. Waivers are required, with youth needing a parent’s or guardian’s signature to participate.

For individuals unable to attend in person, donations can be made online through the Ride for Refuge page of Catholic Family Services, ensuring that support for these vital counselling services continues even from a distance.
