Prince Albert’s Two Miles for Mary Aims to Raise $45,000 for Seniors

The annual fundraising event, Two Miles for Mary, is set to take place on September 26, 2024, with a goal of raising $45,000 to support transportation services for seniors in Prince Albert. This year marks the 38th iteration of the event, which will once again combine a live radiothon with an in-person pancake breakfast at the Prince Albert Heritage Centre.
Kayla Pollock, fundraising coordinator for the Prince Albert and District Community Service Centre, highlighted the significance of the event. “It originated with a lady named Mary who could get almost anywhere in the city within a two-mile radius,” she explained. The initiative aims to provide safe, friendly, and affordable transportation for seniors, helping them stay connected within the community.
The funds raised through Two Miles for Mary directly contribute to the Community Service Centre’s seniors transportation program, which completed over 6,000 trips in 2023, reflecting a five percent increase from the previous year. Pollock emphasized the impact of this service on seniors’ independence and quality of life. “Some people don’t know what they would do without this service for getting to doctor’s appointments or meeting friends for coffee,” she noted, adding that it offers a safe way for seniors to reach their destinations.
Last year’s radiothon successfully raised approximately $30,000, and there is optimism this year’s event will surpass that total. Pollock aims to expand services, including the addition of an extra vehicle and possibly extending operational hours into the evening. “Every little donation helps keep the service running,” she said.
The pancake breakfast, sponsored by Co-op, is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring donations and can also challenge local businesses to match their contributions. This year, the radiothon will be broadcast on both 900 CKBI and Power 99 FM, increasing visibility and engagement for the event.
To enhance outreach, Pollock has implemented a variety of advertising strategies, including additional radio spots, digital posters at the Gateway Mall, and increased correspondence with local businesses. For those who cannot attend in person, donations can be made online at www.pacsc.com under the Two Miles for Mary tab, via cheque to “Two Miles for Mary,” or through e-transfer to [email protected]. The newly established Canada Helps page also allows for one-time or monthly contributions.
Supporters can also donate during the radiothon by calling 306-763-MARY (6279) or by attending the pancake breakfast. “The seniors are a big part of this community,” Pollock asserted. “If we all step in together, we can keep the service going and keep it strong for Prince Albert.”
The Two Miles for Mary initiative not only highlights the importance of community support for senior services but also showcases the power of local efforts in enhancing the quality of life for residents.
