Remote B.C. Island Recognized Among World’s Top Adventure Spots

A remote island in British Columbia has garnered international recognition, being named one of the world’s best adventure destinations. The accolade comes from a recent feature by National Geographic, which highlighted notable experiences for thrill-seekers. Among these, a visit to the Spirit Bear Lodge on Swindle Island stands out for its unique offerings.
The Spirit Bear Lodge, located in Klemtu, provides exclusive access to wildlife viewing areas and cultural sites within the traditional territory of the Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation. According to the lodge’s website, it is an indigenous-owned resort that emphasizes the connection between visitors and the rich natural and cultural heritage of the area.
The Kermode bear, also known as the spirit bear, is a highlight of the region. With a population estimated to be less than 150, these rare creatures are distinguished by their white fur, which aids them in fishing for salmon. National Geographic notes that spotting these elusive animals is a key attraction, making the journey to the lodge part of the adventure. Accessing the lodge involves a scenic two-hour boat ride from a remote airstrip south of the location.
Klemtu: A Cultural and Natural Haven
Klemtu, situated 228 kilometers northwest of Bella Coola, is home to just over 400 residents, representing two distinct First Nations groups—the Kitasoo and the Xai’xais. This small community is nestled within a pristine cove on Swindle Island and offers a diversity of cultural and outdoor activities. Visitors can embark on multi-day paddleboarding trips with Norm Hann Expeditions, or explore the nearby Great Bear Rainforest and Gitga’at Territory through custom wildlife tours.
The recognition from National Geographic adds to the growing list of accolades for British Columbia as a premier destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The magazine’s feature includes other remarkable locations, emphasizing the province’s diverse offerings, which range from stunning national parks to charming downtowns.
As fall approaches, British Columbia continues to attract attention for its breathtaking landscapes and unique experiences. Travelers looking for unforgettable destinations are encouraged to explore the full list highlighted by National Geographic, which underscores the province’s status as a top travel choice.
With a strong emphasis on preserving and sharing indigenous culture, Klemtu and the Spirit Bear Lodge represent more than just adventure; they offer an opportunity for meaningful engagement with nature and local traditions.
