Richmond Residents Honoured for Their Dedication to Heritage
The Richmond Heritage Commission awarded four Heritage Awards on October 30, 2025, to residents who have significantly contributed to preserving the city’s history. The ceremony took place at the Chinese Bunkhouse, located in the Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site, celebrating individuals and organizations dedicated to conserving Richmond’s historic locations.
Among the recipients, Ari and Ruth Burstein along with MLK Construction received recognition for their efforts in preserving the historic R.G. Ransford House. Their work involved a sensitive infill development project supported by a Heritage Revitalization Agreement, which facilitated the conservation of the house and the addition of a coach house at the rear of the property.
Community Contributions Recognised
Jay Scott was honoured for his long-standing commitment to preserving Richmond’s agricultural heritage through his involvement with the London Heritage Farm Society and the management of the London Farm site. His volunteer work, which spans many years, includes serving on the board of directors and spearheading various fundraising and outreach initiatives, according to city officials.
Another notable recipient, Terry Eastwood, received recognition for his extensive contributions to the City of Richmond Archives. Eastwood has dedicated significant time and expertise to archival projects, outreach, and mentoring, ensuring that the community’s history remains accessible and preserved for future generations.
Former city councillor Harold Steves was also honoured during the event for his lifelong dedication to the preservation of Steveston’s heritage. His efforts have played a crucial role in maintaining the historical integrity of the area, ensuring that significant buildings, artifacts, photographs, and documents, along with the community’s narratives, are preserved as part of Richmond’s cultural landscape.
The annual Heritage Awards aim to highlight the vital role of individuals and organizations in promoting awareness and appreciation of Richmond’s diverse heritage through educational outreach and advocacy. The contributions of this year’s recipients exemplify the community spirit and commitment to preserving the city’s rich history.
