Ryan Reynolds Receives Vancouver’s Freedom of the City Award

In a significant recognition of his contributions to the community, actor Ryan Reynolds was awarded the Freedom of the City by the Vancouver City Council during a private ceremony on March 15, 2024. This honour acknowledges Reynolds’ philanthropic efforts and his role as a cultural ambassador for the city.
Mayor Ken Sim praised Reynolds, stating, “Today we celebrated one of Vancouver’s own whose hometown pride has taken our city’s name around the world. Ryan Reynolds isn’t just a movie star; he’s a proud Vancouverite who never forgets where he came from and always finds ways to give back. Awarding him the Freedom of the City is our way of saying a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for everything he’s done for our community.”
Reynolds and his wife, actress Blake Lively, have made substantial contributions to local initiatives. They have notably supported Covenant House Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank, organizations dedicated to helping vulnerable populations, including homeless and at-risk youth. Their efforts extend beyond financial donations; following the catastrophic flooding in British Columbia in 2021, the couple donated to the Red Cross of B.C. and encouraged others to contribute as well.
Their commitment to Vancouver has resulted in significant support for families across the region, providing shelter and resources to those in need. Reynolds has also utilized his film and television projects, particularly the successful Deadpool, to draw Hollywood investment to the city, further enhancing its profile as a thriving cultural hub.
This award adds Reynolds’ name to a distinguished list of individuals recognized by the city, including Leslie and Gordon Diamond of the Diamond Foundation, philanthropist Yosef Wosk, and businessman Jimmy Pattison.
As Vancouver celebrates its homegrown talent, the city acknowledges the impact Reynolds has made, not only in entertainment but also in community engagement and philanthropy.
