Saanich Non-Profit Expands Shelter Capacity with Provincial Funding

The Victoria Native Friendship Centre (VNFC) in Saanich, British Columbia, has secured provincial funding to expand its capacity by adding 25 new temporary shelter spaces. This initiative aims to provide immediate relief to individuals experiencing or at risk of homelessness as the colder months approach.
According to a statement from VNFC’s executive director, Ron Rice – Wush’q, the addition of these beds is a crucial step in addressing the urgent crisis of homelessness in the region. “Adding 25 new temporary shelter beds will allow us to offer immediate relief and support to more people in need,” Rice said. “At VNFC, we recognize the urgent crisis that homelessness presents and will continue to advocate for solutions to support our most vulnerable community members.”
The new shelter spaces are available for individuals aged 19 and older. Those seeking accommodation can contact the VNFC from 14:00 to 19:00 daily to check availability and pre-register for a bed. The centre, located on Regina Avenue, also provides essential services for shelter guests, including meals, showers, laundry access, and transportation assistance.
BC Housing, the provincial agency responsible for housing and homelessness initiatives, expressed hopes that the expanded shelter capacity will alleviate pressure on service providers throughout the Greater Victoria area. Marianne Alto, the mayor of Victoria, previously urged communities within the Capital Regional District (CRD) to create more permanent shelter options in a letter addressed to council members last fall.
Funding for the VNFC’s new temporary shelter beds is part of BC Housing’s temporary winter shelter program. These beds will remain operational nightly until April 30, 2026. Individuals interested in securing a spot are encouraged to call (250) 886-1360 for inquiries and pre-booking.
This expansion is a significant development in the ongoing efforts to combat homelessness in Saanich and the surrounding areas, reflecting a commitment to supporting the needs of the community’s most vulnerable members.
